Taste Masking Technology

Raphe Pharma has expertise in developing and making taste-masked products using the fluid bed coating, ion exchange, and other technologies. We have successfully developed a taste-masking formula to mask exceedingly unpleasant flavors at particle sizes of less than 40 microns.

The palatability of an oral dosage is often determined by taste. Pharmaceuticals, nutraceuticals, nutritional products, and other active ingredients often have an unpleasant taste, which makes oral dosing difficult. Because the material bypasses taste buds when it is swallowed whole, it can be difficult to detect.

Ionic bonding of an ionizable active to an ion exchange resin is another technique used in pharmaceutical products. When formulated with a flavor system, this ion-resin complex is capable of masking residual or early released drug. Because it is insoluble to salivary conditions in this state, there is virtually no unpleasant taste. This process allows the complex to be broken down into particles under gastrointestinal conditions and to be absorbed through the stomach and intestines.
